DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

(MAIN CAMPUS)

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), earlier a part of the erstwhile School of Applied Sciences and Humanities, came into existence on 16th December, 2013. Initially, while

catering primarily to engineering students, the objective of the Department was to enhance the language skills of the technical students not only for academic and professional purposes but also for real life situations. The language course seeks to nurture and encourage creativity in the students by exposing them to samples of literary writings in English. Various electives in Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology deal with ethical reasoning and analysis; values, responsibilities and justice; stress management and organizational behavior; and the existence of the individual in society.

Recently, the Department opened up to research in relevant fields of Humanities and the Social Sciences and has started accepting doctoral candidates. From the academic session 2022-2024, the Department is offering two postgraduate programmes as well: M.A. in English and M.A. in Applied Psychology. With the commencing of the postgraduate and the doctoral programmes, the Department—apart from catering to the technical students of the University—now seeks to become an esteemed center for higher studies and research in Humanities and Social Sciences.

ABOUT THE COURSES

M.A. in English is different from traditional postgraduate courses offered in English and Linguistics.

Along with literary studies, the course endeavours to equip students with an understanding of language as a tool for communication through language teaching and testing. Apart from orienting students towards core academics, the course seeks to make the students employable in areas like translation, corporate training, advertising, journalism and other communication-based professions.

M.A. in Applied Psychology is being offered considering the scope for the various areas of

specialization and employment like clinical psychology, counseling services, forensic and medical

psychology. The increasing demand in fields like conflict resolution, group-management, consumer

behaviour, and human resource development call for skilled professionals who have been trained to

apply concepts of theoretical psychology in real-life situations in a solution-oriented manner. As the

number of departments or centers offering such courses is limited, the department seeks to provide

aspiring scholars and professionals with an opportunity to realize their potential to the fullest.

Language Laboratory:

A fully equipped multimedia interactive language lab with a maximum capacity of 75 students has been set up recently. The software Sanako Study 1200 with features like group discussion, round table discussion, pronunciation activities,100 hours of English content alongwith good quality headphones have been installed in the lab.
